And Justice There is None

A Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Mystery, Book 8
by Deborah Crombie

Well this is the book that I listened to on PC Plus.

Just to tell you about this experience:
I downloaded the appropiate programs on my PC at home. The only problem I had was that I am having sound card issues. But I did it at home just to see if it would work. & it did! I browsed fro the OCL website & also from Listen NJ.
This was an extremely easy program to use.
I'm glad that I bumped into Betsy & she told me she would be up on PC Plus to let anyone on to finish thing# 22. I did & she pointed out some interesting options using this program such as speeding up or slowing down the rate which the narrator speaks, skipping over a segment, burning to a CD ( if allowable).
Since I listen to audiobooks all the time on my antiquated Sony discman, I can't wait to use my MP3 player. You can also download music as well.

OK so where is the party?????

Well I did learn a number of technical things that I didn't know even existed. The thing that I loved is the youtube or podcasts ( I know these have been here for awhile & I have viewed some of the humorous ones) but I love the fact that they are mini videos. You can actually learn something from a youtube, when you want to view it. I also liked Listen NJ. I had known about it but just did not get into it.
This whole lesson has actually brought some of us in circ closer. We were actually helping, encouraging each other to finish a thing. Teamwork is a beautiful thing & challenge.

The only thing I did not like was the sandbox. As I said in my blog, I didn't understand it or see the need for it.

I know that del.icio.us & youtube & podcasts & technorati are being used by library staff right now.

This entire project has opened my eyes & made me feel competent in our ever-changing technical world.

& Thank goodness I was able to keep all my passwords the same !!
A special thanks to Glynnis & Betsy for all the encouragements to start me off & keep me going.
Also a special thanks to Marie for also pushing me to finish & Linda Lido for the feedback & letting me know what was in store for me as I plogged(blogged??) ahead.
Thanks OCL for challenging this old brain.

Last year I took a class, during staff development day on del.icio.us. These are my tags from 25 websites that I researched.I found it to be a useful tool as far as categorizing websites that I am interested in. I also looked at the oclwebthings account & thought it would be very useful for the ya dept as far as reading lists or programming.

http://www.cocktailbuilder.com/

This was on the 2.0 web awards & while I am not a cocktail person I always feel that I do not know how to mix drinks if having a party at my house. Rather than look up individual recipes, you can list ingredients that you have in stock & then click on suggest. The recipe will then tell you what you need to add to your list (as what you need to purchase). Not that I have parties all the time, it is a handy tool if you feel inadequate in the drink mixology area.

I have used some of the other award winners in various catagories such as :bloglines, google maps, flickr, picasa & igoogle. I have personalized my igoogle page with all sorts of widgets.
& I did play around with some of the sites listed in the award winners. Some are useful & some I would never use.

http://bonniemccaffery.com/vidcasts/023.html

This is a videocast (podcast) of a quilting video. It was rather easy to do . Almost like thing #20.The interview is with Sue Nickels & she talks about various topics: such as making a Beatles quilts with her friends, techniques on machine quilting & her books.
I was never a fan of videocasts, but as an instructional tool, I think it's great!

Well in keeping with my theme of quilting, I found ( no big surprise) a video on machine quilting with Shelley. Actually I always associated youtube with embarassing or funny videos. I would never think about using it as a tutorial. Glad I learned about it. It was very short but informative.

Well I went tothe Library Success & I found it very useful in discovering what a wiki is. I like the fact that you can gather info on recommended reading & the programming suggestions were very good as well.
The only thing I did not like is (not sure if I got this right) is that someone can delete what you have written. Is that correct??

So in keeping with my quilting theme I went to a quilt wiki:
http://wiki.allpeoplequilt.com/?t=anon
& found it very interesting. Makes me want to visit other wikis as well.

Thing # 18

Well I added my name to the Google docs page. I really like Google docs rather than Word 2008. I find Word 2008 too confusing. I also went into new for G docs . & I really like what they have to offer. G docs is easy to use very user friendly. If I had to create a document for work & share it with other team members I could see that it would be easy to use & share.

To more powerful ways to cooperate

This was a very powerful article as far as the library reaching out to the world wide web for sharing topics or research articles that might be needed for other people or groups. It also creates an interest that people might not think of the library as far as sharing services or list cataloging. It's also cool to think that OCL might be integrated into a web site for research materials. Makes you really think of the world web out there.

To a temporary place in time...

I really like the last paragraph in this article : a knowledge spa.

In my years growing up with my local branch in Brooklyn & seeing what the library is accomplishing now in 2008, I am really excited to be in a techno-age of the library! Look how far we have come & reading what will be coming down the pike, I can't wait to see it all. See ya at the library.

Thing # 14

Well my eyes have opened to a world that I did not know existed. Technorati is definitely interesting & definitely a place I would want to visit again. As far as what is popular for to blogs, videos, tagging nothing surprises me anymore. It's about what I expected people to be interested in. I am interested in what other libraries are doing though.

1.
Title: Clara Barton : In the Service of Humanity (eBook) Contributions in Women's Studies, 0147-104X ; No. 148
by Burton, David Henry.
Publication: Westport, Conn. Greenwood Press, 1995.

This is what I looked up for Thing #12:Net Library. It took me awhile to figure out titles, subjects. But after using it, I can see it would be helpful looking up a subject that you would need quick info about. I feel confident about showing a customer how to use it & there might be a time that I would need to use it.
2.

First lady of the Confederacy : Varina Davis's Civil War
by Joan E Cashin
This is the title that I looked up in Worldcat. It was very easy to use . The closest library this title is located is in the Monmouth Cty Library system in Manalapan. I can also see that this would be very useful to me. This gives me the opportunity to look up titles that I may want that are not in our database. It also gives me the push to get a Monmouth Cty Lib card that I have wanting to do for awhile now.

Thing # 11

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/dianecolangelo
This is the link to my current list of favorite books. As you can see I am partial, but do not totally like all of James Patterson's books. I have a new duo of authors that I love, that I found by accident: Douglas preston & Lincoln Child. I did not list any of their books, but they co-write together about a fictional character Special Agent Pendergast. I just love their style of writing.
I am also reading a new author ( to me) lawrence Goldstone "The Anantomy of Deception"
This is set in the 1880's, medical setting, about 20 years after the Civil War.
As far as cataloging my books on here, I will probably not use it, but I can see it as a useful tool for people who would like to have a list of titles that they have read. I confess that I did not read any of the discussions on my titles, although I would like to go back & see what other people think about these titles. & I would say most of my items were popular.

Thing # 9

As I posted in #8, I really like g-reader, & find it very interesting in adding feeds. I have added feeds on quilting, scrapbooking, health, running, biking & what is new in medical news.

Thing # 8

These are my thoughts on RSS: I don't like bloglines. I subscribed to about 11 feeds & I had a hard time navigating to retrieve my feeds. I know that it is my inexperience but I had an easier time with g-reader. I think I lost my articles on bloglines.

On g-reader, I entered my gmail account, clicked on reader & started to subscribe to feeds. I can retrieve my articles, star them to save them for later & the best part is that I did not lose anything.

Thing # 2:My thoughts on the 7.5 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners:The easiest habit for me is to "accept responsibility for your own learning"I always love to learn new things, ways, procedures, abilities, etc.. I find this easy , I guess, because I am curious about a lot of things. I always loved crafty things. It is a a challenge for me, although, to complete a quilt. I have taken quilting classes, I buy kits, I buy materials , I also take out books from the library, but there are times that I lack the skills (sewing & piecing) that are needed for this completion. I am aware that I need extra help on these skills & I will need to work on that. I also recognize that I am responsible for this learning challenge. The hardest habit for me is "using technology to your advantage". I sometimes feel tech-deficient when it comes to using programs for learning. Of course I can use the computer, access a program, accomplish a basic skill on that program. But I need to work on that & that comes with practice, practice, practice. Also reading a book on the subject would also help, as well as reaching out to friends, colleagues to help me with this project. I have an Ipod shuffle. It was such a learning experience to know how to download from limewire, transfer to the ipod & listen to the music. & this I learned from my nephew. I can also tell you that I erased my songs 3 times (not on purpose). So this is a learning experience. My thoughts on lifelong learning is that it will keep your brain forever young. There is so much out there in the world to learn , & I fear I will not have a chance to get to it all. So I try something new & hope it will make me a better person.

Thing # 10 Technology Blogging

Well this topic is not about anything new, but it is new to me. I created my own igoogle page & customized it with items that I like. I have a hangman's puzzle, the weather, eye tester, WSJ, coupon finder, daily photo tips, new book releases, Betty Crocker recipe of the day, etc. It was fairly easy & very addicting. All you have to do , after selecting what your background will be, is to click on ADD STUFF, in the upper right hand side. I got up to 30 pages before I started to get bleary-eyed. & my page is still not filled up. The best part of this is that I can access my igoogle page from any computer after I log into my gmail. So this course is teaching me to broaden my web horizons.

I am hoping that this is the link to my igoogle page.

Quilting

A new quilting store has opened in Howell. It's called Mouse Creek Quilts & it is located on Rte 9. Can't wait to go. I am new to quilting & I'm trying to piece together a quilt. I have never taken sewing & can do just the basics, so I am rather slow in producing a quilt square. This is a quilt that was hanging in the Garden State Exhibition Center for the quilt show. It was HUGE!!. Probably about 14-16 feet high. Just seeing all these wonderful quilts motivates me to work on my simple quilt square.
